General Information

About Bulletin of Glaciological Research (BGR)

Bulletin of Glaciological Research (BGR) is a peer-reviewed, open-access scientific journal published by the Japanese Society of Snow and Ice (JSSI). The journal serves as an international forum for the publication of original research, reports, and reviews across all aspects of snow, ice, and the cryosphere.

BGR was established in 1973 with the aim of disseminating snow and ice science nationally and internationally. Since Volume 28 (2010), the journal has been published as a fully online open-access journal, enabling rapid and unrestricted access to accepted manuscripts.

BGR is indexed in major scientific databases, including the Emerging Source Citation Index (ESCI) of Web of Science, providing global visibility and discoverability for authors’ work.

Scope and Focus

BGR welcomes submissions that advance understanding of snow and ice phenomena, their interactions with climate and the environment, and related applications. The journal covers a broad range of topics in cryospheric science, including but not limited to snow and ice physical and chemical properties, glaciers and ice sheets, sea ice, permafrost, snow hydrology and meteorology, ice core studies, snow-related natural hazards, and snow and ice engineering.

Submissions from all research traditions and regions are encouraged, particularly studies that contribute new insights into processes, observations, modeling, and applications relevant to the cryosphere and its role in the Earth system.

Editorial and Peer-Review Process

All submitted manuscripts undergo an initial editorial screening by the BGR Editorial Board to ensure suitability with the journal’s scope, scientific quality, completeness, proper presentation, and adherence to journal policies. Manuscripts that pass this screening are then evaluated through a rigorous peer-review process by independent experts. Final decisions on acceptance are made by the Editor-in-Chief based on reviewers’ recommendations.

Open Access and Copyright

As an open-access journal, BGR applies the following licensing policy. Articles published from 2026 onward are distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided that the original work is properly cited. Copyright of articles published from 2026 onward is retained by the author(s). Articles published prior to 2026 are governed by the license terms applicable at the time of publication.

Publication Charges

As a fully open-access journal, BGR charges a modest Article Processing Charge (APC) for accepted manuscripts. The APC supports peer review management, editorial processing, typesetting, online publication, and long-term digital preservation. Current APC rates and waiver policies are detailed on the journal’s Submission and Instructions for Authors pages.
