8th International Ice Drill Symposium
Copenhagen, Denmark
30 September – 3 October 2019
Co-sponsored by
University of Copenhagen
SECOND CIRCULAR, APRIL 2019
www.icedrillsymposium.dk
THEME
Ice drills are crucial to access ice for climate research and other
studies of the water and basal conditions under glaciers, ice caps and
ice sheets. The ice related research especially related to understand
the past and present climate will improve our ability to predict the
impacts under future climate changes. New techniques are rapidly
evolving within ice drills and include rapid access drills, replicate
drilling and thermal and hot water drilling. This symposium presents a
timely opportunity to show recent advances in our knowledge and
technological capabilities in ice drilling technology. In addition, the
symposium will include the ice drill related themes like ice core
handling, borehole logging and ice camp logistics.
Other relevant topic suggestions are welcome. If you have such a
suggestion please contact icedrillsymposium _at_ nbi.ku.dk
PROGRAM
The symposium will include oral and poster sessions, and will provide a
friendly and intellectually stimulating environment to facilitate
face-to-face interactions and networking. Additional activities will
include an opening reception, a banquet dinner and a mid-symposium
afternoon excursion.

SIDE MEETINGS
The Local Organizing Committee welcomes requests from groups and
organizations for meeting spaces to host side meetings prior to or after
the symposium. Send all requests to icedrillsymposium _at_ nbi.ku.dk.
VENUE
We look forward to welcoming the ice drill community to Copenhagen. The
Centre for Ice and Climate at the Niels Bohr institute has a history in
ice core drilling and ice core science. The meeting will take place at
The Royal Danish Academy of Science and Letter downtown Copenhagen.
SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE D. Dahl-Jensen (co-chair), S.B. Hansen (co-chair),
O. Alemany, K. Kawamura, K. Makinson, H. Motoyama, T. Popp , A. Pyne, J.
Roberts, J. Schwander, K. Slawny, P. Talalay, F. Wilhelms.
LOCAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE S.B. Hansen, T. Popp, K-E. Nielsen, J.
Justesen, I. Koldtoft, S.M. Andersen, T. B. Christensen.
PUBLICATION
Papers from the Ice Drill symposium will be published as a special issue
of the International Glaciological Society (IGS) Annals of Glaciology
with the theme ‘Drilling through the Ice’. The issue will be part of
Annals Volume 61 and will be issue number 83. At the symposium you will
register for submitting a paper with a deadline April 1st 2020.
